Between 2003 and 2007, Thomson Reuters indexed 249,047 papers that listed at least one author address in France. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals classified in the field of space science, followed closely by mathematics. As the right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper average for space-science papers from France was 18% above the world average for the field (9.17 cites per paper for France versus 7.80 for the world). The performance of France-based researchers was also strong in plant & animal sciences (41% above the world mark), agricultural sciences (+25%), and geosciences (+21%).
